Regal TG-60 (c. 1935)

Description

While the name on the headstock might say Regal, make no mistake - this beautiful TG-60, dating from around 1935, is by all accounts an authentic Dobro tenor guitar, dating from a brief period in which Regal was owned by their more highly regarded rivals. The Dobro tells aren't hard to find - the finish work and mesh design is a dead giveaway, and should you be brave enough to remove the coverplate, the cone and spider bridge are unmistakably authentic. But the real magic is in the TG-60's warm, dry tone, lacking the stridency of most Regal instruments of this period. This is a fantastic instrument for Dixie jazz, capable of getting loud but still retaining the quick decay that made these little instruments chord melody machines in the 1920s and 30s.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition relative to its age. Some parts are non-original: most obviously the new, chrome planetary tuners, but also probably the tailpiece, which is substantially older but not the original resophonic cast aluminum that would've been period-correct for the guitar. The cone is an original 30s Dobro cone, and the coverplate and bridge appear to be original as well. Cosmetic condition is good overall, with playing wear consistent in line with what's seen on most instruments approaching their centennial. Finish checking is largely uniform, and the all-laminate body shows no signs of structural damage. The set up is very good, with low, comfortable action in all positions. It is currently tuned DGBE and has a bright, clear, and punchy tone all the way up and down the neck. Included in the price is a non-original hard-shell case.
