While it's hard to go wrong with any D-28, players who want a truly premium playing experience will find themselves satisfied by nothing short of a Modern Deluxe, a premium trim level that takes these classic instruments into boutique, craft-shop territory. This lightly used one from 2021 provides prospective pickers with a real steal of a deal, as this model typically prices over $ 4000 when new. Just like the stock D-28, the Modern Deluxe combines a spruce top with a rosewood back and sides, but Martin here opt to torrefy the spruce for a more open, near-vintage sound. This guitar also features hand-scalloped X-bracing for a remarkably open and loud sound with a long sustain time. A handful of cosmetic upgrades, like herringbone purfling, maple binding, gold tuners, and abalone inlays also help to set this guitar apart from its Standard Series counterpart.
Overall playing wear is very minimal, with almost no pick marks on the top or even on the pickguard. The only noticeable wear is a small gash through the headstock inlay, which likely happened as a result of restringing. It has just seen a full set up with a professional fret dress, level, and crown, and plays very well in all positions with low action. We consider it to be in very good condition. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
