Martin 0-15 (1958)

Description

It's astounding that even after decades in production, Martin's 15 series remains such a well-kept secret in the world of vintage guitars - small-bodied powerhouses like this 1958 0-15 punch well above their weight class while pricing at a fraction of what an 18 or 28 series equivalent might. Combining all solid mahogany construction with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, the 0-15 features a punchy, loud, and dry tone full of warm midrange perfect for solo fingerstyle. As they were designed to be one of the more entry-level options in Martin's lineup at the time, the 15 series featured very minimal appointments, with ivoroid tuning buttons and fretboard inlays to provide the slightest contrast against the dark color of the mahogany.

This guitar arrived in our store on the upper end of good condition, with cosmetic damage more or less in line with what might be considered typical for an instrument over 60 years of age. Moderate asymmetrical warping has occurred in the top with minor bellying around the bridge and sinking around the soundhole. Some minor damage has occurred at the top of the soundhole, likely from contact with a pick, but these cracks appear to be stable and do not pose a structural threat to the guitar's top. The most salient cosmetic wear is a large patch of "buckle rash" on the guitar's back, about two inches in diameter. The only non-original part is the tuning machine for the fourth string, which has been replaced with a period-correct replacement. A footprint from an older tuner is visible around the perimeter of the new one.

The overall amount of scuffs, scratches, and finish checking is fairly consistent with a guitar of this age, with most of the cosmetic wear centering on the guitar's back. As expected, there is also a decent amount of wear on the top, around the soundhole. Checking is consistent on all planes of the instrument. This instrument has never had a neck reset, but still plays remarkably well, with very comfortable action up and down the neck and no fret buzz whatsoever. This is a great example of what we might refer to as "player's condition" - a vintage guitar that will make a good fit for a gigging performer focused on the sound first and foremost, rather than something that looks like it just came out of the case. Included in the price is a non-original, modern hard-shell case, which fits the guitar very well.
