We've been big fans of Gold Tone's banjos for a long time now, so when we heard the Florida-based company was branching out into high-end mandolins, we leapt at the opportunity to put one on the walls. This Grandmaster Elite F-style is the first model we've been able to get our hands on, and all of us on staff are incredibly impressed - while built overseas, the Grandmaster sports high-end craftsmanship on par with the very best Asian-made mandolins currently in production. The Grandmaster Elite pairs a torrefied European alpine spruce top with 4A-grade North American maple on the neck, back, and sides for an absolutely premium spec sheet that does not compromise whatsoever from the needs of the professional mandolinist. Gold Tone apply classic appointments reminiscent of Loar copies, and add a nitrocellulose lacquer finish for a breathable, semi-gloss sunburst without the heavy, tone-stifling qualities of polyurethane. Likewise, the Grandmaster's set up and neck feel are top notch, comfortably placing it firmly in the upper echelon of high-end F-styles and cementing it as a new contender among options for the serious picker. Included in the price is a Gold Tone hard-shell case.
