Description

The L-30 may be the smallest archtop Gibson ever made, but that doesn't mean it lacks any of the punch that jazz and western swing players look for - as evidenced by the fantastic tone on this 1940 model year that's happily wandered its way into our shop. With the same lower bout width as the manufacturer's hugely popular L-00, the L-30 sits comfortably under the arm of players of all sizes, and a flat back gives it a unique feeling totally unlike any other Gibson archtop. This one features a spruce top in combination with a mahogany neck and a birch back and sides, for a warm, rich, and open tone with a character distinct from more traditional acoustic jazz guitars. It of course comes shot in a picture-perfect 1940s Gibson sunburst finish, with a dark mahogany stain on the back and sides for a classic, timeless look that slots nicely into the company's lineup of classic archtop instruments.

This guitar arrived in our store in very good condition, with a below-average amount of playing and structural wear for an instrument of its age. Overall cosmetic wear is relatively light for an instrument in its ninth decade, with most dents, divots and finish damage centering on the top, back, and headstock. The only significant structural repair is a filled hole about 1cm in diameter, which is located on the top of the lower bout right in the "window" of the tailpiece. The finish on the sides and neck may have been oversprayed, as the chequing is not as uniform or visible as it is on the other planes of the instrument. All parts appear to be original, including the vintage Kluson three-on-a-plate tuners and the antique celluloid pickguard. The only aftermarket alteration is a strap button, which was installed directly into the back of the neck heel, and appears to have been done sometime within the last 20 years. Playability is excellent, with low, comfortable action in all positions. Included in the price is a non-original hard-shell case.
