Esteve Bandurria (1979)

Description

At first glance, the Spanish bandurria often reminds American musicians of the mandolin - but these fascinating little flat-top 12-strings are really their own instrument entirely. Its unison courses are tuned in perfect fourths from G# up to A in the same general register as a mandolin, lending it a spunky, punchy tone that excels in any and every diatonic key. This one, a 1979 model built by renowned Spanish luthiery Esteve Guitarras, would make a fantastic and exceptional tool for players interested in jota, fandango, and other traditional styles of Spanish music. Delicate, hand-built craftsmanship combines a solid spruce top with a mahogany neck and a Brazilian rosewood back and sides for a resonant tone that fills out the low end and mids while still retaining a bright, bell-like treble response. Known primarily for their nylon-string guitars, Esteve opt for cosmetic touches inspired by the rich history of the classical six-string, with a full gloss lacquer finish, hardwood binding, and a mosaic rosette.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition relative to its age. The only significant damage is one top crack, which extends from the treble shoulder of the instrument down to the soundhole. This crack has been reglued and should not reopen provided proper care by the bandurria's next owner. Finish shrinkage is within the realm of normalcy for an instrument of this age, but the finish overall is still fairly glossy and has not begun to break in to a matte to the degree that might be expected, nor are there visible finish cracks. Most cosmetic wear centers on the back and likely results from minor scuffing via shirt buttons; it does not significantly impact the cosmetic appeal of the instrument. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
