Description

Over decades in the bluegrass business, Deering Banjo Company has gradually become the first choice of three-finger players everywhere - so it's delightful to get to see an early instrument, like this 1989 Black Diamond, which has been immaculately maintained by its one owner over the decades. Long a sleeper pick for one of the best upperline resonators in production, the Black Diamond is remarkably similar to Deering's all-mahogany Sierra, but adds a little panache with high-end cosmetic appointments and, of course, its black poly head, from which it gets its name. Like the Sierra, this instrument utilises a mahogany neck, pot and resonator in conjunction with an -06- tone ring and a one-piece flange, for a long, powerful, and rich sustain with a surprising amount of low end that puts it right at home in more adventurous styles of progressive acoustic music. We also love the old-timey filigreed diamond inlays and the hardwood purfling, which call to mind the long history of the resonator five-string while still remaining something new and unique.

This instrument arrived in our store on the upper end of very good condition relative to its age, with very minor playing wear considering it's now well into its fourth decade. There is light scuffing on the head, which is original. Other wear is very light and largely uniform, with nothing that significantly detracts from the visual appeal of the banjo. There is little to no shrinkage under the finish - it could easily pass at first glance for a five year old banjo rather than one approaching forty. All parts and hardware appear to be original. The only aftermarket alteration appears to be the addition of railroad spikes on the 7th, 9th, and 10th frets, although these very well may have been done at Deering's build shop at the time of initial manufacture. The set up is excellent with low, playable action that suits a wide range of styles. Included in the price is a non-original hybrid-style case.
