Description
Players interested in budget-friendly vintage guitars have by now undoubtedly seen a lot of Scott Baxendale's work - the Santa Fe-based luthier is probably the best-known name in the conversion business, and can be relied upon to breathe new life into even the deadest-sounding blue collar flat-top. This Regal Junior Jumbo, likely dating from the early 1950s, was probably never a true student-grade instrument, but Baxendale's new X-bracing, bridge, and refret have done a huge amount to bolster this compact six-string into something formidable and a great tool for acoustic blues. The Junior Jumbo features all solid wood construction with a spruce top and a mahogany back and sides in combination with a neck that is likely either birch or cherry for a dry, woody tone replete with midrange. The model is often compared to the Kalamazoo KG-11, a similarly shaped option in Gibson's lineup that has tended to be a bit more sought-after than the somewhat homelier Regal. Cosmetic appointments are minimal, and the guitar has a rustic, simple look that conceals its powerful voice.
Baxendale performed the conversion package on this guitar in 2025, and we are representing it on behalf of its first post-conversion owner. This guitar's cosmetic condition is very good, with a below-typical amount of wear and tear as what might be expected on most 70-year-old instruments. While sound and playability have been revamped, no refinishing work or elective repairs have been performed, and interested parties should note that this is still fundamentally a used guitar and will not look or feel new. Included in the price is a non-original Gator hard-shell case.
