Description

While the modern banjo can't be beat in terms of volume, brightness, and accuracy up the neck, there's a certain old-time X factor that can only be had with a truly antique five-string. This S.S. Stewart Lady Stewart, from in or around 1895, provides an incredible look into the history of this beloved American instrument. Fashioned by famous banjo builder S.S. Stewart, this instrument demonstrates the craftsmanship and care that turned him into a legendary name in the history of the instrument. And beyond its incredible pedigree, the Lady Stewart is made all the more unique by the fact that it's roughly a three-quarter size banjo, allowing it to comfortably play in both open G as well as open A. We can confidently say you've never seen an instrument quite like it.

Given that it's well over 100 years old, the Lady Stewart is in tremendous shape, with playing wear well below what would be considered typical on a banjo built in the 19th century. That being said, some of its parts are likely non-original, including the tuners and the tailpiece. It's currently set up with nylon strings and plays well in all positions with low to medium-low action. We consider it to be in very good condition. The Lady Stewart has long since parted with its case and now comes with a gig bag originally designated for baritone ukuleles, which fits it nicely.
