Description
Among Martin's 1960s output, few guitars are quite as sought-after as the 1969 N-20, and for one simple reason: Willie Nelson. That's right, this is the year, make, and model of Willie's world-famous sidekick, Trigger, and in stunning condition, no less. While decades of playing-in on the road and in the studio have opened Trigger up to be as big and bold as a nylon string can possibly be, the tone is still there on this very lightly used N-20, with a smooth, mellow attack and a surprising amount of midrange by way of a Sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, and Brazilian rosewood back and sides. Cosmetically, this one differs in one very notable way from its famous sibling - a big, 42-style headstock inlay in mother-of-pearl, which may have been a custom appointment added at the factory, or added as an aftermarket alteration by the guitar's first owner. In any case, it puts a unique spin on a time-honored classic and ensures that while the tone may be all Willie, the style and character of this particular N-20 remains unique and personal.
As mentioned above, this guitar arrived in our store in very good condition, with no cracks or structural damage to speak of (meaning it's missing Trigger's iconic second soundhole, for better or for worse). Very fine, shallow checking has begun to appear in the finish, which is most visible on the top. No other notable cosmetic wear is obviously visible on the guitar. All parts are original and there is no obvious evidence of major repair. The neck has remained straight, and action is fairly low. While this may be Willie's guitar, an ounce of Colorado lettuce is not included in the price - but the original hard-shell case, which is in very good condition, is.
