Description
We'd long felt that the M-36 was one of the secret weapons in Martin's lineup - which meant we were darn near heartbroken when the company discontinued the model earlier this year. Luckily, this stunning 1978 model made its way into our shop a few weeks ago, and with nearly 50 years of age and playing time, it sounds even better than one fresh out of the Nazareth factory would. The M-36 is a jumbo model based upon Martin's classic D-35, and features a large, quad-aught top with a narrow waist and a relatively shallow body depth for a more ergonomic playing experience than its dreadnaught cousin. Just like the D-35, the M-36 utilizes a spruce top in combination with rosewood sides and a three-piece rosewood back for a loud, bass-heavy sound that you can hear all the way back in the cheap seats. It also features the bound fingerboard, double-bound body, and mother-of-pearl fretboard inlays that remain the D-35's trademark.
This instrument arrived in our store on the upper end of very good condition when accounting for its age. There are a few small, repaired cracks on the side of the lower bout, which should not reopen provided proper care by the guitar's next owner. All other wear is strictly cosmetic, with a below-average of dents, scuffs, and finish checking, with most wear centering on the top of the lower bout. The finish has begun to break in to a semi-gloss, but at a slower rate than is typical for most 1970s Martins. The neck was reset in 2017 by a very reputable Colorado repair shop, and the action is set at a true medium that responds well to a firm right hand without buzzing. A chrome strap button has also been installed on the underside of the neck heel. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
*Please note, per our return policy, all sales on used and consignment instruments are final.*
