Description
As one of their longest-running models, Martin's D-18 is a true American classic that stands well apart from a field of imitators, and those decades of history have turned vintage 18 Series instruments into some of the most sought-after guitars in the world of the steel-string acoustic. Spend a few minutes with this one, dating from 1953, and you'll immediately understand why - this is a stunning dreadnaught with a warm and genuine tone that will make for an incredible instrument for the professional singer-songwriter or country troubadour. As 1953 was a transitional year for Martin, the type of spruce used on top cannot be definitively determined - it may be Adirondack, Sitka, or even Carpathian - but in any case, the wood is remarkably open and has a warm and mellow midrange that's filled out over decades of use. The top combines with a mahogany neck, back, and sides for a rich, balanced tone unlike any other. This is one of the best dreadnaughts we've ever had the pleasure of hanging on our wall.
This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with relatively little in the way of playing wear relative to its age. The most obvious damage is a hole in the top shoulder, just to the left of the bass side of the neck - an ill-advised location for a strap button, which has since been removed. There are no cracks or other structural damage to the instrument. The original bridge has been shaved down significantly, and the corners of the cut-through saddle poke slightly above the plane of the rosewood. All hardware is original, including a set of rare Kluson single-line closed-gear tuners, the original bridgeplate, and the original pickguard. Some minor warping has occurred in the top, which does not significantly affect the instrument's playability. This guitar has just received a neck reset and plays very well in all positions, including past the octave. Included in the price is a hard-shell case, which is period-correct but most likely not original.
