Description

While we may not be Gibson dealers, the J-45 has always been a favorite amongst our staff members - for decades, the model's dry, woody tone has struck the fancy of players the world over, us included. This one, which dates from 1962, sounds even better than a J-45 right off the factory line, as decades of playing time have served to open up its premium tonewoods and give it a strong low end and a fantastic dynamic range. As always, the J-45 combines a spruce top with a mahogany neck, back, and sides crafted into a slope-shoulder dreadnaught shape for an incredibly versatile tone that fits a wide range of playing styles. As this one dates from before the 1969 embargo, it still features a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and is shot in an eye-catching 1960s Gibson sunburst for an absolutely unmistakable visual calling card.

This guitar arrived in our store in very good condition, especially when taking its age into account. Several aftermarket alterations have been made: first, the original adjustable bridge has been altered to be non-adjustable, with a new, re-routed slot for an extra-thick saddle. Second, a chrome strap button has been installed in the back of the neck heel. This was clearly done over 50 years ago and is period-correct for the guitar. Lastly, a K&K Pure Mini passive piezo pickup has been installed in the guitar, most likely within the last 15 years. This pickup is in excellent working condition. Overall cosmetic condition is very good, with a below-average amount of wear. The most visible playing wear is scuffing on the top around the perimeter of the pickguard, as well as deeper scuffing from a belt buckle on the guitar's back. Finish checking is extensive, but very light and fine and is within the realm of normalcy for Gibsons of this era. The set up is excellent, and the guitar plays very well in all positions, with action set at a true medium. Included in the price is a non-original Gibson hard-shell case.
