Description

Given their relative rarity, we see a surprising number of early Gibson A-4s make their way through our store, and are always impressed by their full, rich sound that seems uniquely suited to old time music. Even so, this one, dating from 1917, is one of our favorites of Gibson's early high-end A-styles, and its sound and condition are sure to make a convert of even the most discerning player. It's tough to pin down what exactly gives this A-4 its unmistakable tone - while open and responsive tonewoods certainly help, plenty of what makes it special is probably intangible and a byproduct of high-end American craftsmanship. Somewhat easier to identify is what makes it so visually beautiful, which comes thanks to (among other things) a classic cherry-burst finish, an original tortoise-pattern pickguard, and the original Handel tuners, which have typically fallen apart on instruments over 100 years old.

Considering this mandolin's age, the condition is very good, and there is no damage or wear that significantly impacts the instrument's structural integrity. The picking and finish wear is fairly minor, and is mostly confined to the top and the neck in first position. All parts and hardware are original, and as mentioned above, it features one of the last sets of Handel in-line tuners that Gibson would have used, as the company stopped purchasing German-made parts during World War I. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
