Description

While Lawrence Smart's mandolins have built up quite the reputation (finding their way into the hands of such players as Chris Thile, John Reischmann, Mike Marshall, and Colorado's very own Nick Forster), his octave mandolins remain quite a bit more rare and unique. This 2020 model is built in the style of a flat-top steel string, and roughly conforms to the size and shape of a double-aught guitar with a shorter neck and scale length. Smart combines an Adirondack spruce top with a koa back and sides for a full, bright tone that breaks new ground in the world of the flat-top octave, rather than retreading into standard mandolin territory at the expense of originality. While cosmetics err towards the more minimal, we're impressed with the fit, finish, and fine attention to detail in the binding and inlay work, and feel it makes for one of the most impressive instruments in our mandolin family inventory.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with an average to below average amount of cosmetic wear. The small amount of scuffs and divots primarily center on the top and come as a result of using a pick; none significantly mar the cosmetic appeal of the instrument. Additionally, it has recently seen a full professional set up and has had a new bone saddle cut to spec. Included in the price is an Access hard-shell case, originally designed for a triple-aught guitar, which was included with the mandolin at the time of its initial purchase and fits it acceptably well.

*Please note, per our return policy, all sales on used and consignment instruments are final.*
