It all started in 1879 when a Portuguese sailor arrived in Hawaii playing his Braguinha. The islanders were smitten, and nicknamed it the jumping flea, or Ukulele (after the motion of the players hand.) The sensation hit stateside in 1915 when the instrument was featured at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
