Experience the sound of a bygone era with this stunning 1921 Gibson F-4 mandolin, one of the most sought-after F-styles ever produced. At over 100 years old, this gorgeous instrument is as open and clear as any mandolin you'll find, with a throaty midrange that calls to mind classic bluegrass and traditional American music. The F-4 has a snarl that leans more towards the sound of a modern mandolin than towards the classical or Celtic sound typically associated with oval-hole mandolins, making it a little more versatile for the contemporary player. And happily, this instrument looks just as good as it sounds, with a bright red sunburst finish, a flowerpot inlay on the headstock, a herringbone rosette, and the original tortoise-pattern pickguard.

While this mandolin does show a reasonable amount of playing wear, it's in truly impressive shape for one over 100 years of age. The instrument still features the original hardware and bridge, no significant cracks or evidence of serious repairs, and a lower than average amount of chips, scuffs and dents on the instrument's body. The finish has broken in nicely, but checking is not as extensive as one might expect from a piece of this age. It's also been freshly set up for a wide range of playing styles, with a full professional fret dress. We consider it to be on the upper end of very good condition. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
