Description
There's something about a Montana-made mandolin that simply feels right - which is exactly why we jumped at the chance to bring in this 1994 Flatiron 1N army/navy pancake, even though it's a little more rustic than most of the used instruments we represent. This sweet little flat-top was built during Bruce Weber's tenure as the head luthier for Flatiron, and features the big bark that his instruments have become known for. A Sitka spruce top and a maple back and sides give it a percussive clap that simply seems too big for such a compact instrument. It's a great piece of American mandolin history and lots of fun to have in the store.
This instrument features very little in the way of cosmetic wear. As is the case on many army/navy mandolins, the action errs towards the higher side as one ascends the neck, but as the truss rod is one-way, adjustments to the height of the bridge would be necessary to improve the set up. Some separation at the center seam has been reglued and closed, and should not reopen provided proper humidification. As it stands, this 1N boasts a great sound and solid playability and will make a great fit in the arsenal of a collector who likes the novelty of the pancake design but still wants something American-made and of high quality. We consider it to be in very good condition. Included in the price is a non-original hard-shell case.
