Description
Everyone knows we love Collings' guitars - but we have maybe an even bigger soft spot for the Texas-based luthiery's mandolins. This 2010 Collings MT, which features a handful of custom appointments, is indicative of some of the company's best work, and is being offered at a tremendous discount for our customers' consideration. While the MT generally features a matte finish and minimal binding, this one boasts a few cosmetic upgrades that places it closer to a fully-appointed MT2 (think of it as an MT1.5). The sunburst top has been upgraded with an eye-catching gloss lacquer finish, and it also features a single bound body in grained ivoroid, with matching ivoroid buttons on the Gotoh nickel tuners. Additionally, this MT features a wide, one-and-three-sixteenths nut to help accommodate players with larger fingers, or those of us who just want a little more real estate when hammering out fiddle tunes. The tone is all premium Collings, with a bright, crisp sound replete with bell-like overtones, but mids and lows are present enough to allow it to easily fill up the backbeat in a stringband.
This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with playing wear well within the range of normalcy. There are a few minor dents, divots, and chips in the finish, which center primarily on the top and the headstock, but do not significantly compromise the visual appeal of the mandolin. Some sticker residue is visible on the back of the headstock, and has proven difficult to completely remove. The gloss finish on the top has begun to break in, and is starting to pull into the spruce earlier than expected. The only aftermarket alteration is a black strap button which has been appended to the back of the instrument at the neck joint. There is no structural damage whatsoever, and the instrument has recently been fully set up at medium action for a wide range of playing styles. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case, which is in good working condition but has been extensively stickered (see photo).
