Description
Back in 2010, Martin commemorated the 60th Anniversary of Sing Out! Magazine, one of the most important periodicals in the history of folk music, with a truly unique guitar - the Martin JSO, a behemoth of a baritone guitar with a striking design based on Seeger's one-of-a-kind 12-string, built for him in 1959 by Liverpool's Stan Francis. With its unusual triangular sound hole, massive lower bout, and long scale length, the JSO closely follows the design of the original model, but rather than a 12-string, Martin adapted Francis' original blueprint into a baritone guitar instead. It's a match made in heaven, as the JSO's cyclopean dimensions play very nicely with B standard's cavernous lows, making this a fantastic fit for guitarists with bass voices or for those who simply want another tool in the toolbox. A few cosmetic details separate this one from your Standard Series guitars, too, including Seeger's signature and a line drawing banjo motif on the headstock in mother-of-pearl paired with a sleek, bare fretboard without inlays.
This guitar arrived in our store in very good condition, with minor cosmetic damage to the finish. Some very minimal finish delamination is occurring along the bass side of the fretboard, and in general, the finish has begun the process of pulling into the wood earlier than expected. Other finish wear appears on the bass side of the upper bout as well as on the guitar's back, and appears to be residue from glue or tape. We chose not to attempt to remove this residue so as to not risk damaging the finish. Overall playing wear is minimal, and the guitar sports an excellent set up, with medium action overall. Three aftermarket alterations have been made - first, the original bridge pins have been replaced with Martin's Liquid Steel pins for a firmer attack and better durability, second, a chrome strap button was installed at the neck heel, and lastly, a passive three-element piezo pickup has been installed, with a Music Nomad Acousti-Lok strap lock adapter. Our price includes the original Martin hard-shell case.
