Description

Martin's HD-28 is one of our favorite guitars here at the Denver Folklore Center, and it's always a delight to hear one that's opened up and matured with time. This one, from 1981, has only become bassier and louder over time, with a crisp, powerful sound perfect for bluegrass flatpicking, but also suited to just about any other type of music you care to name. With a spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides, the HD-28 is very similar to Martin's classic D-28, but also features scalloped internal bracing for some extra volume and sustain. This one has those qualities in spades, and makes quite the impression on just about any picker who sits down with it. Appointments on the HD-28 are fairly minimal, with herringbone purfling adding just a little flash to distinguish the model from a standard D-28.

This guitar has spent decades as a player's instrument and as such does show some cosmetic wear. There are a fair amount of scuffs and scratches consistent with regular playwear, especially pick marks on the top. There is also a repaired crack on the lower bout, as well as one on the back, both of which are now very stable and do not show signs of reopening. The finish has retained much of its original glossiness. However, the action and playability are terrific, and the neck is very straight. We believe it has also already had its neck reset, and should not require any significant work within the next few decades, provided it's properly cared for by its next owner. We consider it to be in good condition. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
