Description
In the years since its introduction, Martin's Authentic Series has proven to be a smash hit with pickers across the globe, but the price tags of new models can certainly be difficult to stomach for most working musicians. That makes this lightly used D-18 1939 Authentic from 2013 quite the steal for players who want a premium dreadnaught at a more palatable price, and as such we don't expect it to stay on the wall for long. While the Authentic Series has undergone a handful of tweaks since its inception, at this point the D-18 1939 featured a torrefied Adirondack spruce top with a standard tropical mahogany neck, back, and sides. Under the hood, a handful of tweaks have been made, including the classic, pre-war style scalloped X-bracing in the original position. The Authentic 1939 also features Waverly nickel tuners (upgraded from Martin's usual Grover open-gears), a drop-in saddle, as well as more subtle visual appointments including a Madagascar rosewood headstock overlay, abalone fretboard inlays, a celluloid tortoise pickguard, and a brush script Martin logotype on the headstock.
This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with below-average playing wear and a relatively minimal amount of scuffing on the top considering its age. There is a small (3/4") indentation on the back lower bout. Additionally, there is some very minor delamination around the binding, which has occurred as a result of the woods shrinking beneath the finish. Proper humidification should nip this issue in the bud and keep this guitar in good playing shape. It has recently seen a full professional set up, and plays well in all positions, retaining impressive clarity up the neck. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
