Harlow Square-Neck Resonator (2001)
Description
While Frank Harlow is sadly no longer with us, his legacy of fine resophonic guitars lives on in the many excellent instruments he built before his passing. This relatively early model, a 2001 all-solid mahogany square-neck, still boasts plenty of the warm, rich and snappy tone that made Harlow's guitars sought-after among dobro players during his lifetime. The naturally warm tone of the mahogany is enhanced via a custom-spun 9.5" Quarterman aluminum cone, bolstering the mids with a bright and articulate zing, and adding more volume and punch than most Beard cones. Inlay work and overall ornamentation is relatively minimal, with mother-of-pearl inlays on the headstock clearly inspired by Martin's 45 Style pattern, and a monogrammed "PFB" block inlay at the 12th fret, but the superb figuring in the quarter-sawn mahogany is the real star of the show and indicates high-quality woods were used on this fantastic next-step dobro.
This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition. Cosmetic wear is relatively typical, with most playing wear confined to light scuffing on the coverplate and minor dents and divots on the neck and back. Finish checking is more pronounced than might be expected on an instrument of this age, and may suggest a very minimal lacquer finish. The set up is very good, with a clear, present tone that loses none of its vibrancy as one moves up the neck. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
