Description

While we primarily carry their flat-top acoustics and mandolins, Eastman are perhaps still best-known for their jazz archtops. This 2012 AR503CE, dating from one of the manufacturer's best eras and the period in which they made their name as a high-end option for budget-conscious beboppers, shows the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail evident on even their most basic jazz guitars. Built loosely in the style of a Benedetto Bravo via a 16" lower bout, Venetian cutaway, and its single set humbucking pickup, the AR503CE combines a solid spruce top with maple laminates on the back and sides for a rich and clear tone both when amplified as well as when unplugged. Eastman give it a dark three-tone sunburst in the style of 1940s Gibsons, shot in a full gloss with elegant cream binding on the body, fretboard, and soundholes. It's an ideal instrument for newer jazz guitarists who may not be ready to drop multiple thousands on a pro-level instrument, but don't want to compromise on quality of construction.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with cosmetic wear well within the norm. The most obvious imperfections are two dents on the top - a 1mm divot just to the right of the treble F-hole on the lower bout, and a scuff on the upper bout's treble side, measuring about 4cm in length. It appears that someone attempted to finish over or fill both imperfections, with limited success. Other scuffing and scratching is fairly uniform and mild, and does not significantly detract from the visual beauty of the guitar. Most scuffing centers on the top, with a light amount on the back. The only non-original alteration to the guitar is the installation of an aftermarket set of gold Super-Rotomatic style tuning machines, which immediately call to mind D'Angelico's Deco-styled hardware. The original tuners are not included with the instrument. The electronics and the set up are excellent, and it is currently strung with D'Addario flatwound 11s. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
