Description

Premium woods are only as good as the skill of the luthier - but this stunning 1997 Collings D2H BA A has both at its disposal. Upgrading the company's flagship D2H model by way of an Adirondack spruce top and an A-grade Brazilian rosewood back and sides, this guitar comes remarkably close (or perhaps uncomfortably close) to the genuine sound of a vintage Martin D-28. Dating from Bill Collings' legendary tenure at the company he founded, this instrument is exemplary of the very best of the guitars that left the Austin build shop in the 1990s, and nearly three full decades of playing time have turned it into an absolute behemoth of a flatpicking instrument that practically demands to be taken back out on the road again. Standard D2H appointments including the herringbone purfling, tortoise pickguard, and the diamonds and squares fretboard inlays pay homage to the history of the American dreadnaught, and are lightly customised by way of aftermarket extras - engraved gold Waverly tuners and what appear to be Brazilian rosewood bridge/end pins.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition relative to its age, with cosmetic wear below what might be expected for a guitar approaching its 30th birthday. There are a few scars on the guitar's top, with the most obvious being a small dent to the right of the fretboard extension, and a larger dent on the top's lower bout on treble side of the guitar. Other salient cosmetic wear includes a light to average amount of dents and divots on the neck, as well as scuffing on the headstock from string ends and some scuffing and denting on the bottom of the headstock, which may be as a result of improperly being mounted in a guitar stand or wall hanger. Other wear is largely uniform and normal, if not light. As mentioned above, the endpin, the bridge pins, and the tuning machines are all non-original replacements, and none of the original parts are included with the guitar. The only structural damage is an extremely small crack on the lower bout's bass side, about one inch in length. This crack has been reglued and should not reopen provided proper care from this instrument's next owner. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.
