Description

The Collings D1 may be impressively difficult to improve upon, but the addition of a solid Honduran mahogany top on this custom 2019 build definitely turns it into a different kind of dreadnaught entirely - a big, powerful axe perfectly suited to writing songs and pounding out cowboy chords while maintaining Collings' legendary level of craftsmanship and build quality. Just like a stock D1, the D1 MH features a Honduran mahogany neck, back, and sides in combination with their pre-war inspired scalloped bracing, and it still features the full 25.5 inch scale length for a bright attack and a powerful low end when hit with a flatpick. It also features the standard aesthetic appointments, including long pattern mother-of-pearl inlays on the fingerboard and faux tortoise binding, although this one was specifically ordered without an endpin and has never had one installed. But unlike a stock D1, the mahogany top shears off bright overtones and some of the instrument's natural projection in favor of extremely present, complex mids for a voice unlike any we've heard in a Collings before.

This instrument arrived in our store in very good condition, with relatively light playing wear mostly confined to a small dent in the back and very light scuffing on the top, which is only visible under oblique lighting. The set up is excellent, with comfortable action, a straight neck, and good intonation. It has recently seen a full professional fret dress, crown, and level, and plays very well in all positions. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case.

*Please note, per our return policy, all sales on used and consignment instruments are final.*
