Description
To commemorate our nation's bicentennial in 1976, Martin introduced the D-76, a limited-run spruce and rosewood dreadnaught which have since become highly rare and collectible. These absolute cannons took the Nazareth-based manufacturer's already highly popular D-35 model as their departure point, and all the low-end, volume, and cutting power that make pickers gravitate towards the D-35 is present in its patriotic sibling as well. Just like the D-35, the D-76 features a spruce top with a three-piece rosewood back and rosewood sides for a classic, bell-like tone that has been a mainstay in flatpicking guitar practically since the introduction of the dreadnaught. As special cosmetic appointments, this instrument features star inlays on the fingerboard, an eagle inlay in pearl on the headstock, and a brass plate inlaid at the neck block that lists information about the guitar and its position in the individually-serialized run of 1,976 guitars that comprised the model.
This guitar is in average to above-average condition for one of its age, with relatively minor playing wear and a below-average amount of finish checking. There are two cracks on the guitar, both of which have been repaired and cleated. One, about four inches in length, extends up from the bottom of the lower bout, and the other runs from the top of the treble side of the bridge to the soundhole, and is covered by a non-original, oversized pickguard. In addition to the crack repairs, this instrument has recently seen a new bridgeplate veneer and a bridge reglue, as well as a full professional set up and fret dress. We consider it to be in very good condition. Include in the price is the original hard-shell case.
