Description
The history of Montana-built mandolins can be complicated for the uninitiated to understand, but the name Flatiron is always at the center of the discussion and is intertwined with some of the best and most popular American-made mandolins in recent history. This Flatiron 2K from 1987 is a great little Army/Navy flat-top with a shockingly punchy and powerful sound despite its small size and minimal construction. Aimed more towards beginning players or those who like the novelty of a "pancake" mandolin, the 2K lacks some of the amenities of a more modern instrument, but makes up for it with great, simple craftsmanship and terrific tone. A Sitka spruce top combines with a koa back and sides, lending it a bright, vibrant sound that won lots of new players over to Flatiron in the company's early days and will be sure to win your ear, too.
Playing wear is very minimal on this instrument, with only a small amount of scuffs and scratches relative to the age. The action errs towards the higher side as one moves further up the neck, but since the bridge is not adjustable, it can be difficult to set up lower without making aftermarket alterations. We consider it to be in very good condition, and feel it would make a great fit for an experienced player who wants a fun piece of American mandolin history. Included in the price is a non-original Superior gig bag.
