Description

We could hardly believe our eyes when one of Jason Romero's highly coveted open-backs made its way into our shop the other day - the British Columbia-based luthier is widely considered to be the best independent banjo builder currently working today. Not only is his work legendary, but Romero's instruments are nigh-impossible to come by, with a waitlist that regularly hovers around the five year mark. For players in the know, this 11" Maple Custom, which dates from late 2022, presents an incredible opportunity to get their hands on some of Jason's best work. With highly figured curly maple - torrefied for added openness - and Romero's standard flat brass tone ring under the head, this banjo has a rich, warm, and formidable sound that has managed to impress every staff member who's picked it up. The original owner opted for Romero's fan bracket mounts, a large curved brass tailpiece, North Star inlays, and a Stewart/Weymann-style headstock for authentic appointments that invoke the storied history of the five-string. As per usual, it comes with a goatskin head, adding a thumpy low-end to an already exceptionally complex instrument.

This instrument arrived in our store in excellent condition, with next to no playing wear that distinguishes it from a brand new instrument. The set up is a true medium oriented towards experienced clawhammer players, but it remains comfortable to fret in all positions. Included in the price is the original hard-shell case, as well as the accessories that shipped with the banjo initially, including a tension key, truss rod wrench, and paperwork on the banjo's specifications.

*Please note, per our return policy, all sales on used and consignment instruments are final.*
